Drop-On or Premix Glass Beads? A Supplier’s View on Which to Spec

We get this question at least a few times a week, usually from a contractor who is quoting a road marking job and needs an answer today. Drop-on or premix? The short version: one sits on top of the paint and reflects right away, the other hides inside the paint and reflects later as the surface wears. Most markings actually use both.

What each one does

Drop-on beads are sprayed or broadcast onto the marking while the paint is still wet. They sit partly exposed on the surface, which means headlights hit them almost immediately and bounce back to the driver. That is why a freshly striped road looks bright the night it is laid.

Premix beads are stirred into the thermoplastic or paint before it goes down. For the first few months you barely notice them, because the drop-on layer on top is doing the visible work. Then traffic polishes the surface down, the top beads wear away, and the premix beads underneath get exposed and take over. A line that only uses drop-on beads can go dark once that top layer erodes, sometimes within a year on busy roads.

How we guide buyers

If a customer only tells us one number, we ask what the specification calls for. AASHTO M247 in the US splits into Type 1 (drop-on for paint) and Type 2 (used in thermoplastics). EN 1423 covers drop-on beads in Europe, while EN 1424 is the premix side. These standards exist for a reason, and most government or motorway tenders name one of them explicitly. When the spec is silent, which happens with private parking lots and warehouse floors, we suggest a simple rule: drop-on alone if the marking only needs to stay bright for a year or two, and a mix with premix if the customer wants the line to keep reflecting for the full life of the paint.

What actually differs in the bag

The two types are not interchangeable, and the difference is mostly in the particle size spread. Drop-on beads lean toward a coarser, more uniform cut, because each bead needs enough exposed surface to catch light. Premix beads run finer so they pack evenly inside the binder without clumping. If you pour premix beads on top of wet paint expecting drop-on performance, you will get a dull line, and the reverse makes a messy surface with beads sinking unevenly.

Roundness matters for both, but for different reasons. A drop-on bead that is egg-shaped rolls to an angle and reflects poorly, so we hold roundness above 80% on every batch. With premix, the bigger worry is beads that are not round taking up more binder space than they should, which changes how much paint you need per square meter.

Coated beads, one more layer of the story

Something buyers overlook until rain season: plain glass absorbs moisture on the surface, and a wet bead reflects far less light. Suppliers offer coated beads, usually silane or silicone treated, that shed water and hold reflectivity longer in damp climates. We make both plain and coated drop-on beads, and for customers in coastal or high-rain regions we usually recommend the coated version even though it costs a little more, because the line visibly stays brighter into the second year.

Talk to us before you guess

If you are quoting a job and the specification is unclear, send us the marking type, the region, and the standard name if you have one. We will tell you which bead belongs in that line rather than sell you a bag that sort of fits. That is the kind of call we make every day, and it usually saves the customer a redo that costs far more than the beads.

Choosing between them

If the specification demands a hard initial retroreflectivity figure on a thick marking, drop-on beads are doing the heavy lifting. If the marking is thin, or the system relies on long-term performance as the binder wears, premix beads carry more of the load. In practice most projects use both, and the specification should state the grading for each role separately rather than naming one product for the whole job.
