Glass Beads as Fillers in Coatings and Composites: What Spec Actually Matters

Beyond road markings, solid glass beads are used as a functional filler – in thermoplastic and cold-paint marking materials, resins, artificial stone, plastics and decorative coatings. Buyers usually focus on price per kilo, but three technical points decide whether the filler works.

1. Roundness and sphericity

Perfectly round beads flow better, dose more evenly and scatter light uniformly. In coatings, irregular particles create streaks and thickness variation. Ask for roundness data and check a sample under a scope before committing to volume.

2. Size distribution

A tight band gives predictable dosing and stable viscosity. If the supplier only quotes “mesh” without a screen analysis, request one – filler performance lives in the distribution, not the label.

3. Chemical stability and transparency

In clear or light-coloured systems, tint and impurities matter. For premix into thermoplastic road paint, the bead must survive mixing temperatures and stay transparent for consistent retroreflectivity.
