Ask most buyers what makes a road marking bead good, and the answer is a mesh number. Size matters, sure, but a perfectly sized bead that is not round reflects about as well as a pebble. Roundness is the quiet spec that separates lines that glow at night from lines that only look fine in daylight.
What roundness means in practice
Roundness is reported as a percentage: the share of beads in the batch that are actually spherical, as opposed to egg-shaped, chipped, or fused together. Standards like AASHTO M247 and EN 1423 require a minimum, usually around 70 to 80 percent for road marking grades. We hold our production above 80 percent, and we test it by putting a sample under a microscope and counting the spheres against the irregulars, which is slower than a sieve test but tells a very different story.
The geometry of reflection
Reflection works because light enters a sphere, bounces off the back surface, and returns toward the driver. That geometry only lines up if the bead is round. An elongated bead catches light at an angle and throws it off toward the roadside, where nobody is looking. A batch with 60 percent true spheres can look acceptable under a sieve but delivers a measurably dimmer line, especially in wet conditions where every lost angle matters more.
Where the non-round beads come from
Beads that come out of the furnace as twins, fused pairs, or tear-shaped droplets are usually screened out by size, since they are often oversize or undersize. But some slip through in the middle of the distribution, which is why the percentage check is not optional. This is also where manufacturing method shows up. A plant with tight control over the flame and feed produces a consistently rounder bead than one that pushes throughput at the edge of the process window.
How to check a batch without a microscope
You do not need a lab to catch a bad lot. Spread a spoonful of beads on a dark surface under a strong light and look closely, or use a cheap USB microscope, which many QC rooms already own. If you see a noticeable share of ovals and fused pairs, question the batch. Better still, ask the supplier to include the roundness percentage on the certificate of analysis. If they cannot give you a number, that itself is an answer.
